Moderator:

John Winsor, Director of Digital Strategy, Crispin Porter + Bogusky

John Winsor is a respected author of Spark: Be more Innovative through Co-Creation and Beyond the Brand: Why Engaging the Right Customers is Essential to Winning in Business. He also is the VP/Executive Director, Strategy and Product Innovation at Crispin, Porter + Bogusky.

In 2007, Winsor sold his company, Radar Communications, to CP+B. He founded Radar in 1998 with Nike as its first client. Using strategy and academic-based market intelligence tools, Winsor helped some of the country’s most progressive companies learn from key voices in their communities through methods he gleaned from his years as a journalist. Prior to founding Radar, Winsor built an empire of magazine publications devoted to sports such as mountain biking, in-line skating, and extreme skiing. In 1990, he acquired the rights to publish a then-struggling magazine, Women’s Sports & Fitness. Within three years he turned the magazine around and launched several other highly profitable titles, selling the business to Conde Nast and Peterson Publishing in 1997.

John holds an MBA from the University of Denver and lives in Boulder with his wife and their two children. He truly embodies the executive who “does it all” by rock-climbing daily, running a highly successful organization and helping companies achieve their goals.

Panelists:

Hashem Bajwa is Director of Digital Strategy at Droga5.  In other words, he is a geek in better clothes. He works with brands to shape their digital marketing and helps to keep the agency and its creative work ahead by tapping into the latest innovations and thinking in technology, media and the web. Before joining Droga5, Hashem was Digital Strategy Director for Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco, where he was part of the team that led the agency’s digital transformation.  He contributed to the interactive work for such brands as Sprint, Frito-Lay, Quaker Oats, Comcast, Hyundai, Saturn and HP where he was also part of the global strategy council.

Hashem studied International Affairs at New School University and began his career at the United Nations working in global communications in 2000. In 2007 Hashem was the youngest person to be named in AdAge’s “40 Under 40 to Watch”… at the ripe age of 26.

Hashem writes about technology and marketing as a columnist for Brand Republic’s Revolution Magazine in the UK and AdAge's Digital Next in the US. While Hashem does not have any children or pets, he does have a robotic dog named “Beta”.

James Cooper, Digital Creative Director, Saatchi & Saatchi

Campaign described James as ‘one of the brightest stars in digital advertising’. He has worked in advertising for nearly fifteen years. The last seven of which he has been a digital creative director. He has picked up awards for creativity and effectiveness at the world’s best award shows including The One Show, Cannes and D&AD for global and local clients such as Sony, Unilever, IBM and Vodafone.

He has been creative director for London’s leading independent Digital Agencies, Dare and Agency Republic, both being named Agency of the Year (in Dare’s case three years in a row) but previously worked as writer for some of the most established Ad Agencies including Ogilvy and Darcy. In 2008 he left London to become a partner at Another Anomaly in New York, where he helped create YouTube sensation Lauren Luke’s make up brand from scratch.

James has a passion for teaching advertising. He recently taught a semester for Miami Ad School, previously taught sessions at Watford College (‘The Oxbridge of Advertising’) and founded Dare School, a creative graduate trainee scheme in 2006. He continues to blog and speaks regularly at industry events on both sides of the Atlantic. For one of the foremost experts in digital media he recently did a strange thing: he launched Celebrity Ping Pong a print magazine about Ping Pong. He is rated 1393 in the US at Table Tennis. He *will* beat you.

Mr. Matt Spangler is a digital marketing entrepreneur and strategic thinker with a track record as both an agency leader and a brand consultant. He was a partner at successful digital agency, thehappycorp global, and served as Chief Strategy Officer, serving clients such as Apple, Mercedes AMG, Anheuser Busch and HSBC. Most recently he has been providing consulting services for brands including Coca-Cola and Absolut.

He has a strong focus on curating and connecting talent and generating strategic insights that elevate the role digital, design and brand play in effective communications. His expertise in digital and mobile marketing, brand strategy, digital media planning, and experience is balanced with the business acumen that comes from managing the tactical executions that emerge in those channels (application development, SEO, video production, viral initiatives etc) and developing new business.

Ably demonstrating the gray area between life and work so common within the digital creative community, Matt was also co-founder of LVHRD, a “fight club” for the NYC creative community. In the last 4 years, LVHRD created over 50 unconventional events that fueled interaction and competition among NYC creative professionals and established a reputation as a leader in the digital/creative community of NY. This work has been covered by Fast Company, The New York Times, NY Post, Wired, Gawker, ABC News and many others.

Taras Wayner is Executive Creative Director at R/GA. Taras oversees advertising campaign work across R/GA and sets the creative direction on the Walmart account. He has been instrumental in merging Walmart’s conceptual branding efforts with utility, allowing people to absorb the Walmart message in ways that are entertaining, memorable and useful. He has an impressive track record as a brand storyteller with more than 18 years of experience.

Prior to R/GA, Taras was a creative director at Berlin Cameron United, where he developed Samsung’s “Imagine” campaign, a global, integrated brand initiative that five years on is still running in markets around the world.

Before joining Berlin Cameron United, Taras was a creative director at Young & Rubicam, leading initiatives for Sony and the NFL. His NFL work included a successful TV campaign to promote the playoffs. Featuring actor Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Crash, Ocean’s 11), the spots represented a major shift in how the NFL markets itself. Instead of relying on game clips and military music, the campaign celebrated the fan and connected with the audience on a more direct, emotional level. The ads helped reverse a steady decline in playoff viewership, generating record-high ratings for the league. They also picked up a Silver Lion at Cannes.

Previously, Taras worked at Cliff Freeman & Partners on Coca-Cola, Fanta, Staples, Church’s Chicken and FOX Sports. The humorous FOX Sports campaign contributed to the successful launch of the Fox Sports Net cable channel and was honored with a Grand Prix at Cannes and inclusion in the Clio Hall of Fame.

Taras’s work has earned him 12 Clios, four One Show Pencils, eight Art Directors Club Cubes, a D&AD Pencil and five Cannes Lions, including the Cannes Grand Prix.

Rick Webb is a co-founder and the COO of The Barbarian Group LLC, an interactive marketing and technology firm. Since its founding in 2001, Rick has been instrumental in building the company from four dirty nerds working out of an apartment to a multi-city, internationally recognized interactive creative and technology boutique. In addition to being one of the creative shepherds of the company, Rick has primarily been responsible for developing the celebrated “secret-sauce” of The Barbarian Group: its consistent ability to deliver uncompromising creative work, and undisputedly brilliant interactive marketing, over and over, even as the company grows. As COO, Rick oversees the integration of the Creative, Technical, Software, and R&D divisions of the company, and as a partner, he acts as a new business and client service executive for several clients.

Since its founding, The Barbarian Group has revolutionized interactive marketing, establishing itself with its early work for Volkswagen and Nike, and catapulting into national mainstream recognition with the Subservient Chicken, which the Barbarians created for Crispin, Porter & Bogusky and Burger King. The firm has practically cornered the market on smart, funny, sophisticated marketing campaigns, partnering with agencies on a range of projects such as Milwaukee’s Best Light’s Beer Cannon, M&Ms Become an M&M and Comcastic.com. The firm has recently broadened its horizons, focusing on deeper relationships with sophisticated marketers, both on the agency and on the client side, as well as delving into pioneer R&D, art and software work - most recently bearing fruit in their partnership with Saturn on their groundbreaking Nextfest exhibit, and the processing-based visualization work known as Magnetosphere.

Rick has over ten years experience in design, advertising and “The Internet.” Prior to co-founding The Barbarian Group, he worked as an interactive studio manager at Arnold Worldwide during their celebrated Volkswagen days, working with fellow Barbarian partners Keith and Robert on a variety of award winning campaigns. Rick has also worked at Philip Johnson Associates, a Cambridge-based technology-focused advertising agency, and at Ernst & Young LLP, where he was when the Web was born. Rick has a degree in international economics and art history from Boston University, and was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska.
